Garden Envy

How does your garden grow?  Mine has been challenged by the weather, first by major rains in April and May, and now excessive heat that resembles late July, early August. I shouldn't be watering this soon into the season, but I am, so I'm a little concerned.  I had high hopes for better gardening months this year but Mother Nature is still above normal and off her rocker!!  I know I shouldn't complain but I must vent somewhere and your all so good at comforting, plus I'd love to know how your conditions are too? So many are turning to gardens to help supply food and fill the freezer so I know how you feel, it's depressing at times....But we can't give up! Gardening is a huge leap of faith, so if you are in need of some cheap inspiration, comb through gardening books and magazines for cool ideas to help your gardens survive. Mulching is tops on my list, and I'm going deeper than ever before this year! I'm also collecting milk jugs so I can fill them up, poke holes in the bottom so it will slowly water my plants over a longer period. High 90's here this week so it dries up pretty fast!

    Dear Mother Nature,
I'm not sure what is going on in your life, but please stop taking it out on us! Gardeners from all over are overwhelmed with poor growing conditions of all kinds! I'm not asking for miracles, I realize it is June, but these above normal temps. are too soon, please check your calender again and help us out! We are on your side but need some help here! Thank you and carry on!
Love, Sue

  2. All this talk about heat and here I am in Northern California where it just won't stop being rainy and cold...also not good for veggie production. It is feeling like January instead if June. Seriously I have only worn shorts 2 times so far this year! Very unusual weather for sure!

  3. We have been cool but the 90`s have arrived. Very dry and windy. I didn`t plant a garden this year. My veggies are in pots. I hope the 100 degree days hold off for a while.

Answering your questions about the fires. We are in the northwest part of the state. The fires are in the east. I am having a neighbor clear our yard with a tractor to remove the dead weeds and create more than the suggested 30 foot perimeter around the house. We get lots of lightening during the monsoons and the brush here is DRY!

  4. Hi Sue,
I am a new follower from northern Wisconsin. It's been too hot here too. We planted a garden but not much came up yet. We've been trying to keep things watered but it drys out so fast. If you get a chance stop on by my blog sometime. It is a mix of flowers, recipes and crafts.

  5. Hi Sue, it's been awhile, I haven't been getting around to blogs lately. Too much other stuff going on.
Love your picture of the fence and your rose bush. Simply beautiful.

I agree about these temps...however with not living in our house this summer, we aren't having to water this year.

Hope you have a blessed week.
BTW, my blog has a new url.

  6. I am all over those pink roses and that little shabby fence. ;) Well... we're watering here again too but like you I know I need to mulch deeper. We have a huge stack of old hay that Lydia our goat trompled over winter so it's full of goat manure. About 6 more inches of that is fixin to go on our tomatoes. I just know that when we all bite into those juicy lucy vine ripened red maters it will all be worth it. Mmmmm Praying for rain here in Arky.
