Fifty is Nifty, for Barbie!

I have alot in common with Barbie, she turns 50 this year, as I will. She has curves, as I do. She was born a blonde, as I was. She's lead a interesting life, as I have. And her creator had faith in her, as mine does. With that said, Barbie and I have come a long way!

Barbie was born to replace the flimsy paper dolls that were so popular in the day. But she faced tough critics that thought no Mommy would buy a doll with breasts for their daughters, if only they could see the toys of today? Barbie is still the best selling doll of all time, lending girlhood memories to all females alike. She's held up much better than I!

I wish I still had my first Barbie, not sure which one it was, but I do remember we spent many years together, playing house and sharing secrets. I'd love to hear about your memories of Barbie, your first one or your favorite one?

Happy Birthday Barbie! Fifty is nifty for you, not so much for me!

  1. Yup! Had one just like her. And Ken and Midge! Remember Midge her little friend and Skipper her little sister? had them all. My mom gave them to the cousins one day when she thought I was too old to play with them. I rember being sad that day but as I look back my mom was the generous one...my cousins didn't have any dolls...till they got mine. Thanks for a trip down menory lane!
    Blessings!

  2. 50 is only a number. You can choose to bloom and continue growing or just mold away. I think you are a bloomer.

  3. I can still remember the commercial that was on TV in black & white of course, I was 7 years old going on 8. I wanted her for Christmas and Santa was so very good to me last year. She was the one of the first Barbie's made with black hair that was like thread and Ken had blonde hair that was actually fuzz:) Until my nephew chewed some of his hair off while my mom babysat him:)
Alot of memories, now my granddaughters play with them and love the clothes for her.

  5. I think I have one of these Barbies in my collection. I started collecting in my late 20's after losing all mine from childhood. I loved Barbies but I didn't have all the doodads that are available today. My pool was the bathroom sink and cars were my shoes. At least I used my imagination which I feel kids today don't have to do. :(
    I think 50 is the new 30!!!

  6. I wasn't all that into Barbies, but I remember my sisters having them. I remember Midge with the freckels. Not so many Ken's in the house....wonder why that was? Did he come out later or something? My girls loved Barbies growing up. I have quite a few packed away in the attic. Maybe someday their children will have them to play with.

  8. I didn't play with dolls much. I liked dressing them up. I really liked collecting the clothes. I did have Barbie's tho. I remember my very first one when I was 7. We went to a little department store,Zayers, in one of the first open air malls. She wore a bathing suit, she had soft skin..not hard plastic and her knees bent. The thing that really got me was when you took her to the bathtub with you her hair changed color when she got wet. I haven't seen too many of them in antique store's guess she wasn't very popular her knees had a tendency to break open.

  9. I had Barbies, but never the sister and ken only came later! My first one was the Beach Barbie with blonde hair and a bathing suit, and the next one was the Sports barbie with a tennis skirt and socks and snickers! I also had the picnic set with Hollywood swing, table and chairs. My parents didn't want to spent much money on barbie stuff tho. Very sad, because I wanted the camper so bad! One christmas I got the sailboat and my cousin the horse, lots of playtime back then. I still got my Barbies packed away at my parent's house.

  10. I purchased a Barbie for my nieces's 3rd birthday after asking her mother what I should buy- She said she "might" like a Barbie. Well, after she opened the Barbie present we couldn't get her to unwrap anything else! Who'da thunk? Our video of this event sends us into hysterics because she says "Barbie" about 1000 times with different inflections on the name- I have never seen a little kid so excited about a gift!

  11. LOL! My parents were some of those that refused to buy a doll with breasts! I never had a real Barbie, but my daughter did and my grandaughter has a couple too.

    How soon is your birthday?

  12. Sister P has been collecting Barbies for a long time. She has the first Holiday Barbie still in the box and says she will keep them for her retirement. I also bought her the complete set of 'Little Debbie' Barbies when they were offered on the box of snack cakes. I've never had a Barbie myself, but I had a doll once that came with a kit where you learned to sew clothes for it.

Thanks for asking how I was doing, my sweet friend. xxoo
