Day 21 of a month of me is really all about Father's Day, but since both my hubby and I no longer have our father's, I celebrate him and our boys who are now daddy's and husbands. Happy Father's Day to all Dads out there, we appreciate you!
If one passion best described me, it would have to be my love of herbs. I'm not sure how or when it started, but I'm convinced it's been in my blood from the beginning. I've been told my grandmother ( on my Mom's side) played with herbs too, used them in concoctions like I do and grew many, just like me. I never knew any of my grandparents so I've never known that bond but sure do miss it. Funny how things like this skip a generation but I love the fact that I'm continuing with her passion, making it my own and hopefully passing it onto another generation.
I love herbs, can't get enough of them! I make my own salves that really work and are much more gentle on your skin. I grow and dry many kitchen herbs that I use to cook with plus I make teas and such. I'm self taught but like to think my grandmother is guiding me. A few years ago I made my first flu syrup from wild elderberries, it was easy, good and did help to keep us well and flu free that winter. I'll be making more this year for sure! My love of herbs lead me to start my Herbal Farmstead blog, if you love herbs too and wish to learn more about them, I have many articles there including one on Elderberries and my famous tea jellies. The link is to the right under my other blog. It's not updated as often as I had hoped but once things slow down a bit, I hope to write up another article for it.
Herbs are a big part of who I am, and I'm so glad they are! Lavender is one of my favorites along with rosemary, sage and dill. The smell off each herb is amazing, I grow many just for the aroma when touched! If you're a Herbie too, I wanna hear about your herb garden. I've created a small one that will do till I can expand, can't have too many herbs, now can we!
we have herbs too..going to pick some and dehydrate them to use as we need them so they don't go to waste...:)
ReplyDeleteSue,I started last year with growing herbs and have added to my herbs. I LOVE French lavender and it is growing like a weed this year with all the rain.. I bought curry this year..I do have rosemary, thyme, basil, oregeno, taragon, sage... I bought Stevia this year..It is suppose to be very sweet..use in teas..I am going to check out your other blog because I am a firm believer in natural healing.. Honey and garlic (raw) I have many herb books. I have my herbs in containers right now and want to fill one side of the house my for my herb garden but was unable to get to it this year....but that is my plan next year..I don't know what it is with weeds this year but they are over powering me...I will be spending each day in the early morning hours weeding. Thank you for sharing your recipes..Lisa
ReplyDeleteIve been a Herbie for over 20yrs. I started the herb garden at the restaurant I worked at and since Ive been gone its become a huge thing there. Ive taught herbal cooking classes at a local herb shop too. And now Im moving north to Oregon and hoping to have an herb/antique shop up there. Ive grown all sorts of herbs but here at this house I dont have much left. The darn gardeners guys keep ripping my stuff out! (gotta have them when you live in an area with a HOA and rules.)
ReplyDeleteSo once I land Ill be busy building a garden of herbs, a shop , a business and creating lots of things I hope to sell too.
I think your right it must skip generations. I love it, mom didnt. My daughter will take some when I suggest but isnt into it. My grand daughter however did her paper for school on herbs after working in my garden here. So theres hope for it to continue with her.
I adore herbs. Rosemary, sage, thyme, basil and lavender are my all time favorites. I don't have a place to keep them alive, but I get the dried ones from Grandma's Candle Shop. She keeps a good supply on hand for me and gives me a very good price. I also keep ground balsam pine in my bedroom and in my trashcan under the liner. So nice to take the bag out and smell the pine scent wafting up out of it.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I LOVE the Herbal Farmstead too. xxoo
Good Morning Sue,
ReplyDeleteHappy, Happy Birthday! I hope that you have a lovely day.
I'm a fellow herbie as well. Been growing and using them medicinally for over 20 years now too. I love visiting your Herbal Farmstead blog too and have always enjoyed your articles in Small Town Living magazine, so keep those article on herbs coming. I'm going to give your tea jelly a try this year.
